HASTINGS, Neb. — The South was stacked for Saturday's Nebraska Shrine Bowl boys soccer match, and a predictable record rout ensued.
Two goals and two assists from Aaron Galley of Millard West and three goals from Devon Strecker of Millard South — both were on the All-Nebraska team — paced a 8-0 whitewashing of the North in the 15th annual contest. An estimated 750 watched the girl-boy doubleheader at Hastings College's Lloyd Wilson Field that benefits the Shrine Hospitals.
"Our team had a lot of the guys I played against in high school," Galley said. "They're really good players and I was excited to get to play with them once."
Galley received the Dr. Bill Best Award as the boys most valuable player. Nebraska recruit Molly Thomas, from Millard North, scored the first two goals in the North girls' 3-0 victory and received the Karnes Family Memorial Award as the girls most valuable player.
Galley and Strecker battled for four years on their high school teams, but they were teammates at one time in the Gladiators' program. Strecker is going on to Doane College. Galley will attend Nebraska, which has only club soccer.
